About my Tour de Salon

In 2012 I am challenging myself by riding the Tour de France – from my living room...

Well, I couldn’t really afford to go to France and probably don’t have the fitness to do the actual Tour, so I figure this is the next best thing. I have hired a spin cycle, appointed my boyfriend my DS, argued for late starts using flex-time at work and organised my lounge room in St Kilda, Melbourne to create as realistic environment as possible. I’ve got organic gels, shaved legs (I am a girl) and a muddy Skoda.

When the Tour climbs the Tourmalet- I’ll be on the toughest setting.
When Cav sprints to the line- I’ll be out of the saddle.
When theres a crash- I’ll probably acquire some carpet burn.

Why am I doing this?

I am not a cyclist. In fact I’m really not that fit. So why am I doing this? Generally, I aim to fulfil four main objectives (in rough priority order):
  1. To ride the Tour!: Do I really need to say more?  Its a life long dream (of the past 2 months).
  2. Get fit in the middle of winter: I really need a mid-winter goal.
  3. For shits and giggles: I am sure my friends will find some comedic value in my efforts.
  4. For charity: It really is all about me, but if you wanted to, I’d take it as a great sign of support if you made a donation to Bicycles for Humanity. This is a great local volunteer run charity that fixes up old unwanted bikes and gives them to people in developing countries. The most I ever rode was during a year I spent volunteering in Tonga in the Pacific Islands. I didn’t have a car and there was no reliable public transport, so my bike got me to work, the market and allowed me keep in contact with friends. I’ve seen first-hand what a difference a bike can make to a person living in a developing country.
